Quote & Quote Reflection

Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear” - Mark Twain

Courage is one of the starter of any virtue. In order to put a virtue into practice you must have courage to start it in the first place. Everybody has had to use courage in their lifetime, for any reason. It could be a conflict at school or the workplace, or even a stresser from home/family life, you have to be able to produce courage when it is needed most from you or someone that is counting on you. It is in human nature to disagree or argue about irrelevant or opposing topics, but without courage, you might never get your voice heard.

All around the world people have been fighting for freedoms and rights for so many years, standing up for yourself or your race takes an amazing amount of courage. Yet people still are fighting for rights and freedoms everyday! Courage can be found in the most unlikely places.
This quote can be connected to the myth of Hercules; Iolaus was resistant to fear and pursued the hydra even though he wasn't immortal and he could have died trying to help Hercules. Therefore even though Iolaus had fear, he overcame it, he mastered his fear in order to help his uncle defeat the terrible monster.

  1. This is an effective choice of quotation. The reflection is direct, but it doesn't really extend our understanding too much beyond a literal connection, which means that while the quotation is effective, if maybe doesn't provoke a different way of looking at courage.
